About the artwork
This dense Baroque flower still life combines fringed pink peonies, white and pale pink roses, orange poppies, as well as blue morning glories and purple foxglove blossoms into a lush bouquet against a almost completely black background. A butterfly and several small beetles sit among the petals, while a dragonfly glides over the leaves at the bottom of the picture. Only the blossoms themselves emerge from the darkness, giving the composition a concentrated, almost floating effect.
As a mural in the living room or dining room, this dark, color-intensive motif unfolds its full effect against bright, neutral wall colors that emphasize the strong contrast between black and the flower colors. Also in combination with warm wood and terracotta tones, for example with vintage armchairs in the Midcentury style, the art print fits harmoniously into a cozy, earthy room design.
The original comes from Rachel Ruysch, who painted "Roses, Morning Glories, Poppies and other Flowers in an Urn on a Stone Ledge" in the late 1680s. Ruysch is considered one of the most important flower painters of the Dutch Baroque, known for her lifelike detail and dramatic lighting against a dark background.
