About the artwork
This Baroque still life features heavy grapes in dark blue, purple, and reddish-brown, hanging from a vine, accompanied by a fuzzy quince and a bright red carnation at the top of the image. A small caterpillar crawls over the quince, while ears of wheat and tendrils are lost among the grapes. The light purposefully illuminates individual berries and leaves, leaving the rest of the composition to disappear into deep shadow, which lends an almost dramatic depth to the scene.
As a wall mural in the living room or dining room, this dark, high-contrast motif particularly unfolds its effect against light or sage green walls, which emphasize the dramatic chiaroscuro contrast. In combination with its counterpart of peaches and light grapes as a diptych, it creates a harmonious pair of wall murals for a larger area.
The original was by Jan Davidsz. de Heem, who painted works like this fruit garland still life between 1650 and 1660. De Heem is considered one of the most important still life painters of the Dutch Baroque and was known for his detailed, symbolically charged garlands of fruits, flowers, and insects.
