About the artwork
This Baroque still life depicts an intricately decorated Römer glass, filled with golden wine, framed by a spirally peeled lemon, its peel hanging down in elegant curves. In front of it, opened oysters lie on a green velvet cloth, accompanied by a lemon slice and light grapes. The muted, warm background and the precisely captured light on glass, fruit flesh, and mother-of-pearl give the composition a quiet, almost reverent opulence.
As a wall hanging in the bedroom or dining room, this dark, noble motif unfolds its effect particularly well in subdued, warm rooms with wooden furniture and velvet textiles. The iridescent shimmer of glass and oyster shell also comes into its own next to brass or gold accents.
The original work is by Jan Davidsz. de Heem, who painted "Still Life with a Glass and Oysters" in 1640. De Heem is considered one of the most significant still life painters of the Dutch Baroque and was known for his so-called pronkstillevens, in which precious objects and exquisite foods symbolized wealth and pleasure.
